Guest Speaker and Instructor:
Philip Gonsalves

Philip Gonsalves is a Mathematics Coordinator at the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE). He has been teaching mathematics at California State University, East Bay since 1986 and is also a former Oakland public middle school teacher. Philip is the Executive Director of the Alameda County Collaborative for Learning and Instruction in Mathematics (ACCLAIM) and Co-Director of the Mathematics Development Center @ ACOE, which provides direct support, professional development and coaching to over 30 districts throughout California.

Participants will learn how to effectively implement current K-12 mathematics education research into daily classroom practice. The “research-into-practice” will include strategies for developing relational thinking, effective use of alternative algorithms, and developing connections within and through mathematics. This workshop is accessible to all levels of mathematics backgrounds!

Willard Middle School Looking for Tutors and TAs
Willard Phoenix Rising provides a wide range of enrichment opportunities to Willard Middle School students.  They have a wide range of opportunities available — tutoring students, teaching or assisting with all sorts of enrichment classes, leading or assisting with youth groups, coaching or scorekeeping for sports, etc.  Programs run from 3-6pm M, Tu, Th & F, and from 2-6pm on Wednesdays. The College of Science and Engineering offers exclusive  scholarships for students in all departments: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy. CSTA NEW TEACHER SCHOLARSHIPS

CSTA is pleased to announce that, through the generosity of a grant provided by Northrop Grumman, they will be offering seven (7) new teachers a scholarship to attend the 2009 California Science Education Conference in Palm Springs. The applicant criteria details of the scholarship and application form are provided below. CSTA asks the favor of sharing this information with your networks in order to get the information out to those science teachers that may be eligible for this scholarship.

Applicant Criteria:
-> Science teacher in a diverse student population elementary or middle school.
-> Science teacher in their first five years of teaching.
-> Teacher has received approval to be absent from the classroom on Thursday, October 22 and Friday, October 23, 2009 for purposes of attending the conference.

Scholarship will cover the following expenses:
-> Full conference registration
-> Three nights hotel accommodation
-> One year membership in CSTA
-> Up to $100 in travel expenses
