How to Become a K-5 Science Teacher
Steps to becoming a K-5 Science Teacher in California
1) Obtain a Multiple Subject Teacher Credential application and familarize yourself with all requirements and due dates. Complete the application and submit along with all required documents as early as possible. You will also need to complete a graduate school application via CSU Mentor.
2) Register, take, and pass the California Basic Skills Examinations (CBEST) as early as possible (Fulfills Basic Skills Requirement).
3) It is recommendated that you take Bio/Sci 652 to gain early field experience along with applying the science knowledge that you currently have. The field experience hours from this course will also count toward the 45 hours you will need to apply for the credentials.
4) Register, take, and pass the CSET Multiple Subject Subtest I, II, and III exam early as possible (Fulfills Subject Matter Competency). You may also visit a subject matter competency advisor to review whether you have the proper courses to fulfill this requirement. You can find the list of advisors here.
5) On track to obtain a bachelor's degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited college or university.
6) Maintain a grade point average that meets at least the minimum requirement.
7) Prepare a statement of purpose according to the application guidelines.
8) Prepare a resume. It is recommended that you include your educational accomplishments, work experience, and volunteer experience.
9) Request letters of recommendations (at least 3) from a professional or academic reference. Letters should address applicant's character, aptitutde for teaching, work ethic, and/or academic ability.
10) Obtain your bachelors degree (or higher) and receive acceptance to credentialing program.
11) Complete Multiple Subject Credential program.
