Service Experience Fall 13

Every semester undergraduate Teacher Fellows must complete classroom or education based service hours in order to meet fellowship requriements. Here are the following options for Fall 2013:

Teacher Education Assistant at California Academy of Sciences

This volunteer assists the Teacher Education Specialist in preparing, delivering, and cleaning up professional development workshops for teachers of grades pre K-12; participates in the creation of Educator Guides for Academy exhibits; and supports other projects in the Teacher Education program area as needed. This provides many opportunities for the volunteer to learn about classroom teachers and their needs and to explore ways that museums support teachers on field trips and in the classroom. Opportunities may also be available (if desired) to gain experience teaching adults and/or developing curriculum for students.
No. of positions: 3 Maximum
Commitment: 4-10 hours per week. Flexible schedule, but some evening and Saturday hours may be necessary. Minimum commitment of three months.
Site: CalAcademy 55 Music Concourse Dr. Golden Gate Park, SF, CA

Pay: Teacher Fellowship, No additional funding.

AMG Math Tutor

The CSME Teacher Fellowship and the City College of San Francisco Accelerated Math Gateway Program are seeking two Teacher Fellows to work as tutors part time at City College of San Francisco. Students will be providing tutoring for community college students who are taking introductory mathematics courses at City College of San Francisco (CCSF). These students are interested in exploring a career in engineering and possibly transferring to SF State. Tutors are required to be knowledgeable in the following content
areas: Geometry and Intermediate Algebra (High school level).
Commitment: 1 semester with the potential of a 2nd. Tutor is expected to work approximate 2.5 hours per week on Monday (11:30am-1:00pm) or Thursday (11:30am-1:00pm) along with 1 hours of prep time.
No. of Positions: Positions filled.  Please check in during the Spring 2014 semester.
Pay rate: $17/hour

Site: City College of San Francisco 50 Phelan Avenue, San Francisco, CA. 94112. Student must provide their own transportation to site. The Muni stops just one few blocks from CCSF and is only about 10 minutes away by car from SF State.

AVID TUTOR (San Francisco Unified School District)


Description:
Under the guidance of the AVID Coordinator and AVID Teachers, tutors will work at various San Francisco Middle and High Schools to guide small groups of students through a study group session.  Students bring questions from their content area classes to discuss with their peers and gain new knowledge or work together to problem solve the challenges they
encountered with the material. Tutors also serve as positive role models, valuing education and its benefits.

*Training is provided

Commitment: Flexible Part-Time Hours from 8am-4pm during school hours.  Paid position requires tutors to commit 5-15 hours per week.
Pay: $12/hour
Number of Positions: 8-10

San Francisco Math Circle

San Francisco Math Circle is looking for Volunteers for their Elementary and Middle/ High School programs for the Spring semester.  Please see below for program details.

Elementary Math Circle:
Meetings Thursdays, 5-6pm.
Location: SFSU
Spring Meeting Dates: 1/23/14 – 5/8/14.

Middle/ High School:
Meetings Mondays 3:45 -5:00
Locations: Lowell High School, Denman Middle School, June Jordan School for Equity.
Spring Meeting Dates: Jan 27, Feb 3, Feb 10, Feb 24, Mar 3, Mar 10, Mar 17

Commitment is important for developing relationships with students so  we’re asking that if you want to volunteer with SFMC please make a  commitment for the entire Spring semester.

San Francisco Education Fund (Volunteer)

Description: Be a volunteer at one of the many focus schools in San Francisco. Tutor and/or mentor students one on one or in small groups.
Commitment: Must commit at least one (1) hour per week, and bilingual speakers are in high demand.
Site: SF Education Fund will match you based on your interest, skills, and time commitment.
Volunteering Process:

3) Obtain your TB immunization
4) Prepare to attend trainings provided

Teacher Observations or Other Internships

Undergraduate fellows are allowed to find alternate service experiences. They must meet one of the following criteria:
- Working with students in grades K-12 in math or science
- Observing in math or science public school classrooms (local school districts preferred)
- Working in an research education setting
- Enrollment in MATH 375: Early Field Experience
- Enrollment in SCI or Bio 652: Science Partners in K-12 Education (SPIKE)
