Cal Teach Student Advisor Position
UC Berkeley is seeking a full-time Student Advisor for Cal Teach Berkeley, an undergraduate teacher preparation program that allows science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors to explore K-12 teaching as a career and supports them in obtaining their secondary science or math teaching credential. (Job Title: Student Services Advisor 3)
Duties and Responsibilities: The Cal Teach Student Advisor will be responsible for:
- Advising prospective, new, continuing and transfer students about the Cal Teach program, including enrolling in Cal Teach courses, completing prerequisites, declaring a Cal Teach minor, applying for the credential program, participating in summer opportunities and study abroad programs, and sharing information about teaching credential options, scholarships and requirements
- Matching students in Cal Teach courses for their field placements with mentor teachers in local K-12 schools, and overseeing the field placement experience and its integration with Cal Teach courses
- Counseling students on careers in K-12 science and math teaching, and supporting students to secure teaching jobs in California public schools
- Recruiting new students to the program and supporting interested students to continue taking courses in the Cal Teach minor sequence
- Creating, implementing and updating a marketing and outreach strategic plan
- Coordinating the admissions process for the credential program and supporting students to submit required documentation for the credential
- Scheduling courses and sharing Cal Teach and campus-wide policies with Cal Teach faculty
- Planning and coordinating events, including orientations, receptions and a variety of informational workshops
- Collecting, archiving and analyzing student records and survey responses, e.g. for making projections for future program needs, for accreditation with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and for continual program improvement
- Representing Cal Teach at professional meetings and conferences
The Cal Teach Student Advisor will work with the Cal Teach Program Director, Project Manager, administrative assistant, and other Cal Teach faculty and staff to fulfill the student advisor duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will have the following:
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (science, math, engineering, or education degree preferred but not required)
- Ability in problem identification, developing original ideas, reasoning, problem solving and organizing strategic plans
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, and identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs preferred, as well as knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment
- Experience with K-12 education and Bay area public schools preferred
Application: Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The position is currently funded for up to 2 years; extension of the appointment beyond that date is possible based upon funding. Salary range is $42,000 to $55,000, depending upon experience.
