SF State Noyce Fellowship

About The Noyce Program

The Robert Noyce Scholars program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program to provide scholarships to students who are committed to teaching science or mathematics in high need school districts upon the completion of a single subject credential program. The main goal of the program is to increase the number of teachers with strong science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) content knowledge in high need school districts. The CSME Noyce Fellowship Program will offer scholarship support for up to three academic years to each qualified participant.

Benefits of the program include...

  • up to $10,000 awarded each academic year for up to two years
  • Support and advising through the CSME Teacher Fellows program
  • Funding to attend one science or math education conference a year.
  • Participation in summer internships with community colleges to help recruit and increase the profile of STEM teaching pathways.

Fellowship Requirements

For each year of the grant, all 10 SFSU Noyce Fellows will engage in activities that are designed to support their pathway into full time secondary science or math teaching.  The program for the fellows is structured around collaboration, leadership, and inquiry into the practice of teaching and learning science and math.

All Noyce Fellows will participate in a shared core program: a special Noyce Seminar and full membership in the CSME Fellow Program. The undergraduate Noyce Fellows will take the recommended coursework for pre-service STEM teachers and serve in special internships. Credential year Noyce Fellows will take the normal credential coursework with additional assignments and with special school placements.

Scholarship recipients are required to teach two-years at ANY school in a high need school district for each year of scholarship accepted. The directors of the program will assist scholarship recipients in finding jobs in these districts and will help prepare recipients for their jobs in high need school districts. The term "high need" means a local educational agency that serves an elementary or secondary school located in an area in which there is:

  • a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line;
  • a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; OR
  • a high teacher turnover rate.

For a listing of School Districts that meet the high need criteria, based upon the criteria of low income, see the U.S. Department of Education website. Using the Search function you can either check on a particular school or download a listing of schools and school districts for a particular state.

Qualifications

Scholarships will be awarded to students entering their junior year, senior year, or credential year at SF State. Applicants should be majoring or have majored in a science, math, or engineering field and demonstrate aptitude in science coursework. Noyce Fellows who receive their award as undergraduates can complete their teaching credential at SF State or at any other higher education institution that grants teaching credentials.
