Stats Tutor Needed For CCSF

Overview:

Metro Academies is designed to boost college completion for low-income and first-generation students by coordinating course requirements and accelerating academic development during the first two years college—a make or break time for many students—and institutionalizing educational “best practices” that will lead to improving college completion rate for both CCSF and SFSU. Metro Academy is a four-semester learning community (cohort). Metro Academy students receive one-on-one support from faculty and have individual education plans worked out with an academic counselor.

As we roll into our third year, Metro is seeking out ways to better support students in their first two years of college. In addition, our prior experience has demonstrated being proactive and beginning tutoring at the start of the semester, leads to higher passage rates in crucial courses like Math.

We are seeking Statistics tutors to work with students who are currently enrolled in Statistics courses at CCSF. We asking for tutors who can commit a minimum of 15-20 hours a week for the Spring 2011 semester. Tutors will receive a $10 an hour stipend. Please contact Rama Kased at ramak@sfsu.edu or 415-235-3513.

Julia Robinson looking for table leaders for Sunday

Overview:
Since Julia Robinson was a mathematics professor at UC Berkeley, it is especially fitting that the first 2011 Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival will take place on the UC Berkeley campus. This festival will have a morning session and an afternoon session on Sunday, January 30, 2011. The morning session will be from 9:00 am to 1:15 pm and the afternoon session will take place from 12:15 pm to 4:30 pm. There will be many tables with exciting mathematical activities set up in the Pauley Ball Room in the MLK Student Union on the UC Berkeley campus. These activities will range from levels that middle school students will enjoy, to levels that will challenge the brightest high school students.

Compensation:
For people with undergrad degrees they’ll be paying $100 for the morning or afternoon shift, $150 with lunch for morning and afternoon. They’ll be paying younger mathematicians (math majors) they’ll be paying $75 for the day or $ 35 for one session.

If you haven’t done this before then you can go to a training on Saturday, 1-3 at UC Berkeley Evans Hall. We’ll also be doing a training for people to become elementary math circle instructors which are needed weekly throughout the Bay Area, often paying $100-$200 a session. This session will run 9:15-11:15 at Evans Hall in UCBerkeley.

Critical Issues In Mathematics Education

Overview:
The Mathematical Science Research Institute will host the eighth CIME workshop this Spring. MSRI and the workshop organizes are especially interested in encouraging mathematicians to participate actively in this workshop and to become engaged in the community of scholars working to improve mathematica teaching and especially the mathematical education of teachers.

The workshop will examine the Common Core State Standards and their implications, showcase materials and successful teacher education programs, and how mathematics education research can improve practice.

What To Expect:
The audience for the workshop includes mathematicians, mathematics educators, classroom teachers and education researchers who are concerned with improving the teaching of mathematics and, in particular, the mathematical education of teachers. The workshop will showcase materials and successful teacher education programs, examine the Common Core State Standards and its implications, and explore how mathematics education research can improve practice.

Escape From Textbook Conference!

Overview:

Escape from the Textbook!”,  is an online and in- person community for math teachers. We now have over 150 members worldwide, with maybe 1/4 here in the Bay Area. We will be holding our first conference on February 12, in San Francisco. It will be an opportunity to network with colleagues who want to escape from the textbook for a lesson, a unit, or an entire course.

Working together, we can help each other escape from the textbook, whether for a lesson, a unit, or an entire course.

While our schools are very different from each other (large and small, middle and high school, public and private), the challenges facing us are similar. The Escape from the Textbook! network can help us take up those challenges through:

  • networking with like-minded teachers
  • sharing of successful approaches
  • multischool collaboration groups that focus on specific courses or topics
  • strategies on how to complement or replace textbook material
  • assessment ideas
  • different lenses to analyze curricular and pedagogical ideas

Speakers: Jo Boaler of Stanford University (Author of “What’s Math Got To Do With It?) “The Many Colors of Algebra–Engaging Disaffected Students Through Collaboration and Agency.”

Paul Zeitz of the University of San Francisco (author of The Art and Craft of Problem Solving) “Games, investigation, and problem solving.”

Register for the conference here: http://www.escapethetextbook.org/

On line: we have a community on www.edWeb.net, for long-distance sharing and collaboration with fellow math teachers all over the US and the world. Members ask for suggestions on anchor problems for algebra, for feedback on new worksheets, for approaches to developing students’ understanding of angles, and so on. Other members respond with helpful ideas. Sign up by going to www.edWeb.net/escape — include a brief note about yourself.

In person: we have quarterly meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area, where we do math together and discuss pedagogical questions. (The meetings are announced on the edWeb site.)
Questions? Contact us: info(at)EscapeTheTextbook.org

Location: Urban School of San Francisco
