The Learning Design Group at the Lawrence Hall of Science has just a couple of positions still open for science and literacy curriculum developers, to help us create NGSS-aligned middle school science units that integrate hands-on science with innovative use of technology and a focus on disciplinary literacy.

We need educators who are fast learners, excellent writers, and strong collaborators. For our science developer positions, we are particularly seeking a strong background in physical or earth and space science. Experience as a middle school teacher especially desirable.

College Track Seeks Academic Tutors

Position Title: Academic Tutor OR Study Group Leader
Tutoring Hours: 4:00 – 7:00pm, Monday – Thursday and 4:00 – 6:00pm, Friday; Minimum six hour/ week
Start Date: ASAP
End Date: December 12, 2014 (with possibility of extended contracts ending June 2015)

What is College Track?
Founded in 1997, College Track exists to help students, who have the desire but lack the resources and support, to attain higher education and fulfill their own best promise. We work with students from historically under-served populations: 99% of our students are of color and all come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through a comprehensive, three-pronged program of Academic Affairs, Student Life, and College Affairs, College Track guides students to successfully complete high school and graduate from college. Academic Part Time Staff Positions Currently Open:
·      Tutor: In a large room with 20-35 students, tutors work with students at a ratio of about 4:1.  Based on need, some tutors will be assigned to 1:1 student support.
·      Study Groups Leader: Working with a small group of students on a particular subject area such as Biology or Chemistry or Algebra.  This combines a small amount of direct instruction along with targeted homework help/ tutoring.

Tutor: Tutors and study group leaders get to work with students not only on their daily homework assignments, but also support study skill and organizational skill development. Tutors are, effectively, teachers, in a small group or 1:1 capacity.
Mentor: Tutors are not only tutors, but also serve as mentors. Get to know and develop relationships with students while developing your classroom management skills. Be a role model for students and maybe even change their lives!
Grow: Through professional development, meetings, and trainings, learn more tutoring and teaching techniques and develop skills in cultural competency, data-analysis, youth development, and more.
§  Reliably keep to a regular weekly work schedule.
§  Abide by all College Track rules and expectations (no food/ cell phones while tutoring, etc.)
§  Actively engage with a variety of different students on a daily basis with the goal of supporting their academic growth and achievement.
§  Help create and maintain a quiet, focused, and safe environment for students to learn in.
§  Maintain focus on College Track when at the center (i.e. no outside work or assignments when in the tutoring center)
§  Attend all required tutor orientation sessions and academic staff meetings.
§  Participate in self-evaluations and supervisor-conducted evaluations as required.
§  Maintain open and regular communication with the Academic Director and Tutor Coordinator as well as other academic staff regarding student behavior and academic progress or challenges
§  Submit bi-weekly timesheets in order to log hours
·      Bachelors’ Degree or current enrollment in a Bachelors’ Degree program.  If you are currently enrolled in college, you may be required to submit an unofficial copy of your transcript.
·      Strong understanding of one or more basic high school subject areas
·      At least one year of experience working with at-risk or under-privileged youth, preferably in an educational setting
·      Ability to manage high-school-aged students and keep them on-task and productive
·      An understanding of the perspectives of people of different ethnicities, cultures, religions, genders and backgrounds from your own.
·      An understanding of the achievement gap and a passion for fostering educational equity
·      Excellent organizational and study skills (including note-taking, organizing assignments, study strategies)
·      Previous tutoring experience and experience working with high school students strongly preferred.
·      Clear fingerprint background check and tuberculosis test
Strongly Preferred:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to maintain a collaborative team atmosphere
  • Highly approachable and personable
  • Able to work at least 2 days a week (Monday-Thursday) and able to attend 15-20 minute meetings weekly with Tutor Coordinator
  • Ability to manage and maintain a positive, productive tutoring environment with high expectations
  • Some leadership experience preferred
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA, if currently enrolled in college courses

The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program is a nonprofit organization that helps skilled professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to make the transition into teaching these subjects to younger generations. The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program supports our Educators as they move through a clear career pathway, which includes tutoring, guest teaching, and preparation for full-time classroom teaching.
